Brighton highlights

Royal Pavilion

The former royal pleasure palace, with its Indian-style domes, is Brighton’s most famous building. At the time of writing adult tickets are £21.50 (opening hours vary by season). If time is tight, walking around the gardens and taking photos outside is free.

Brighton Palace Pier

Walk out over the sea past the arcades and rides. Note that a small entry charge (£1) now applies at peak times between March and October.

The Lanes and the seafront

Wander the narrow lanes full of independent shops and cafés, then stroll the pebble beach. For a view from above, the Brighton i360 tower rises 138 metres; adult tickets start around £20.50.

The cliffs in the afternoon

Afternoon light is ideal for the white cliffs. Start at Seaford Head for the classic view over Cuckmere Haven, then head east to Birling Gap for the beach steps and on to Beachy Head for the lighthouse.

How to get between them

  • Bus: the coastal bus from Brighton to Eastbourne stops at Seven Sisters Country Park (Exceat), taking about an hour. Check the timetable first.
  • Car: about 40 minutes to the country park, with pay-and-display parking.
  • Coach tour: the simplest option, with everything linked up and a guide.

Tips

  • Wear walking shoes: the clifftops are grassy and uneven.
  • Bring a windproof jacket and water.
  • Don’t over-pack Brighton. The cliffs deserve at least three hours.
