The Seven Sisters look good in almost any season, but the day you choose makes a big difference to your walk, your photos and how busy the clifftops feel. Here is what to expect through the year.
The short answer
- Best overall: May, June and September. Long days, mild weather, and quieter than August.
- Best for photos: a clear afternoon, staying into the early evening.
- Quietest: weekdays outside the school holidays.
Season by season
Spring (March to May)
The downs turn green, wildflowers appear on the clifftops and daylight gets longer each week. Paths can still be muddy after rain, so bring shoes with good grip. Seven Sisters Country Park car parks switch to longer summer hours from March.
Summer (June to August)
This is peak season. You get the longest days (sunset is after 9pm around the solstice) and the best chance of blue sea. The trade-off is crowds, especially on sunny weekends and bank holidays, when car parks at Birling Gap fill early. The seasonal coastal bus to Birling Gap and Beachy Head usually runs on summer Sundays and bank holidays, so check the timetable before you go.
Autumn (September to November)
September is often the sweet spot: still warm, the sea at its bluest, and far fewer visitors once schools go back. By November days are short and the weather is more changeable, but a crisp, clear day can be spectacular.
Winter (December to February)
Expect around eight hours of daylight, cold wind on the clifftops and muddy paths. On a clear day the low sun is beautiful and you may have the viewpoints almost to yourself. Plan to be back before dark, as the country park car parks close at 6pm in winter.
Best time of day
Mornings are calmest and quietest. For photos, the cliffs look their brightest in the afternoon and early evening, when sunlight falls on the chalk. Seaford Head, looking across Cuckmere Haven to the cliffs, is the classic late-afternoon viewpoint.
Weather tips
- The coast is usually cooler and windier than London. Bring a windproof layer, even in summer.
- Check the forecast for wind as well as rain. Strong gusts make clifftop walking unpleasant.
- After heavy rain, chalk paths are slippery and cliff falls are more likely. Stay well back from the edge and the base of the cliffs.
Plan around tides at Birling Gap
If you want to walk on the beach below the cliffs, check tide times first. The National Trust advises keeping the steps in sight and staying at least 5 metres from the cliff base.
